Mistley gains FIAS Accreditation

The Port of Mistley and its associated storage facility at Wrabness are pleased to announce that they are now FIAS accredited for the storage and packing of fertilisers.
The port has a long history of handling fertilisers both in bulk format as well as in bags and continues to work with the market and industry leaders in handling their cargoes through the port. The port is already ISO 9001 and TASCC accredited and this additional accreditation further reinforces the ports continued drive to ensure that high standards are maintained.
The port of Mistley is located on the R Stour in Essex and is an ideal location for the import and distribution of bulk and bagged fertilizers into E Anglia and the neighbouring counties. In 2010, Mistley handled just under 200,000 tonnes of cargo of which fertilizers were a significant percentage.
Vessels up to 3500 tonnes can be handled at the port, with fertiliser cargoes predominately arriving from Northern Europe and the Baltic states. Goods arriving at the port can be stored in the quayside stores or in the ports’ COMAH approved storage facilities, or distributed direct from the vessel to end receivers.
The port recently invested in a bespoke bagging plant for fertilisers, packing into 500 kgs and 1000 kg bags, as well as providing cargo-screening facilities for bulk cargoes.
Ron Reason – Operations Manager at Mistley commented that he is really pleased that the port has gained FIAS as this demonstrates our continuing commitment to the fertiliser industry and our clients in particular.

Port of Mistley Handles Record Tonnage

September proved a record month for the Port with its busiest month for over 2 years. The port has already exceeded its 2009 volumes by some way, and the indications are that volumes will continue to increase for the forthcoming year. The port, which specialises in handling conventional bulk and unitised traffic, has responded to the increased volumes by investing in 3 additional mechanical handling machines. Ronald Reason, the operations manager said, “the additional plant gives us a greater flexibility to handle an increasingly diverse range of cargoes on behalf of our customers”.

25 Year Celebration

Nigel Woods - 'Woody', one of the team based at our Scunthorpe warehouse, recently celebrated 25 years with the company. Nigel started work for the company in April 1985 and is one of our most experienced machine and plant operators. Currently, Woody spends much of his time ensuring that the Zircon sand shed is always kept in good order. In recognition of his long service, Nigel was presented with a monetary voucher, which he put to immediate use, purchasing a new TV. Carl Langham, TWL Operations Manager at Scunthorpe is pictured with Woody after receiving his voucher; Carl joked that it would come in handy for the World Cup if his wife would let him have the remote control long enough!.

Drax 'Gets the Drift' of Freight on Britain's Waterways

TWL is pleased to be working closely with Drax power station and their ash management company, Hargreaves Coal Combustion Products Ltd, together with British Waterways, to arrange shipments of bulk PFA from Drax power station. Each shipment removes about 40 lorry loads from the road network and takes advantage of the most carbon efficient means of transporting freight. Peter Emery, production director of Drax commented, "At Drax we are continually looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment. Using the waterways to transport our PFA not only means that we utilise a lower carbon form of transport and reduce our movements by road, but by reducing transportation costs we are able to look further afield and gain access to new markets. The more PFA we are able to sell, the less goes to landfill taking us closer towards our target of zero ash landfill."

Port of Mistley - It's in the Bag!

The team at the Port of Mistley were pleased to see their replacement bagging plant arrive in time for the new season. The plant is capable of bagging 1,000kg and 500kg bags and was successfully commissioned at the end of the year. The plant ensures that bulk fertiliser cargoes arriving at the Port, can still be discharged, stored and packed on site reducing the need for double handling for our clients.
